A Beginner’s Guide | Basing Miniatures

Basing Your Minis

Basing isn’t technically required, but in my opinion it is pretty fun to do! It can add a lot of character to your minis and provides an opportunity to get creative.

Some basic materials that are commonly used are:

  • Corkboard – You can get sheets of this on Amazon. Cork Hot Pads are pretty great too, plus they are thicker than the sheets.
  • Sand/Pebbles – All Purpose Sand from any garden center is cheap and has pebbles in it for variety
  • Flock – It’s nice to have a a few colors to add some depth.
  • Grass Tufts – These are easy to work with and look great! Apply these with tweezers.
  • Scatter Terrain – Any spare bits you have lying around. Or you can buy kits of scatter terrain such as Citadel’s Skulls Box.
  • Wax Plants – Some fake plants (The ones from hobby stores) look like miniature plants. Just be sure to remove the wax with some degreaser.

I use PVA Glue for most of my basing (Wood Glue Specifically. I get it by the gallon!). For things like plants and larger rocks you’re better off using superglue though0.
